If you juggle several clients, it is easy for chat history, brand notes and brief documents to blur together in a single AI inbox. Claude Projects for freelancers solve that by giving each client or service line its own workspace: separate chats, a shared knowledge base and project-level instructions.
This guide explains how the current chat Projects feature works on Claude.ai, what is free versus paid according to Anthropic’s official docs, and a practical way to set up client workspaces without inventing earnings claims or “I tested this overnight” stories. Prices and plan limits below were checked against Anthropic’s public pages in early October 2026; always reconfirm on the live pricing page before you subscribe.
What Claude Projects actually are
According to the Claude Help Centre, Projects are self-contained workspaces with their own chat histories and knowledge bases. Inside a project you can upload documents, set instructions and keep focused chats with Claude.
Projects are available to all Claude users, including Free accounts. Free users can create a maximum of five projects. On Pro and Max, the pricing comparison table lists Projects as available without that five-project cap. Project sharing and collaboration are limited to Team and Enterprise plans.
Anthropic is also rolling out a new Projects beta in stages, starting with Claude Code for selected Pro and Max subscribers. Existing chat Projects continue to work as they do today. This article focuses on the current chat Projects workflow most freelancers will use on Claude.ai.
Why freelancers benefit from one project per client
A project keeps client context in one place so you are less likely to mix Brand A’s tone with Brand B’s product facts. Typical uses include:
- Retainer writing or editing for a named client
- Proposal and research packs for a niche you sell into repeatedly
- A productised service (for example show notes or FAQ drafts) with a fixed process
- Your own business ops: templates, SOPs and pricing notes kept separate from client work
That pairs well with other research workflows we have covered, such as using Perplexity for competitive research and proposals or Gemini Notebook for client research. Projects are less about web search and more about keeping your approved materials and instructions in one Claude workspace.
Free versus paid: what the official pages say
Verify current figures on claude.com/pricing. As of this check:
- Free: $0. Up to five Projects. No project sharing or collaboration.
- Pro: $17 per month with annual billing ($200 billed up front), or $20 if billed monthly. Projects listed as available; more usage than Free; includes extra capabilities such as Claude Code and Research on the marketing page.
- Max: from $100 per month, with 5x or 20x more usage than Pro options, plus higher output limits and priority access at busy times.
- Team Standard seat: $20 per seat per month if billed annually, or $25 monthly. Team and Enterprise are the plans that unlock project sharing and collaboration.
- Team Premium seat: $100 per seat per month annually, or $125 monthly.
Prices shown on Anthropic’s site exclude applicable tax and can change. Usage limits apply on every plan.
Enhanced project knowledge (RAG) is paid-only
On paid plans (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise), when project knowledge approaches the context window limit, Claude can automatically enable Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) and expand capacity by up to about 10x while aiming to keep response quality. Free users can still use Projects and a knowledge base, but that RAG expansion is documented as a paid feature.
There is a small wording tension in Anthropic’s personalisation article, which in one summary line marks project instructions as paid-only, while the dedicated Projects articles state Free users can create projects and set project instructions. Prefer the dedicated Projects documentation for workspace setup; treat RAG expansion as the clearly paid enhancement.
How to create a client project (step by step)
You can later move a standalone chat into a project via the chat name dropdown → Add to project, or move chats between projects the same way.
Build a useful knowledge base without overloading it
On the project’s main page, the knowledge base sits on the right. Anything you upload there is available across chats in that project. Context is not shared across chats unless it lives in the knowledge base (or you paste it again).
According to Anthropic’s file upload guide:
- Project files: up to 30MB per file; unlimited file count, but total extracted content must fit Claude’s context window (RAG on paid plans helps when you near the limit).
- Project content type: text extraction only, except multimodal PDFs.
- Chat uploads (different limits): up to 500MB per file and up to 20 files per chat — useful for one-off attachments, not a substitute for the project knowledge base.
Practical freelancing pack for one client project:
- Brand voice one-pager and banned phrases
- Approved product or service summary (facts you can cite)
- Recent brief or statement of work excerpts (remove confidential third-party data you are not allowed to process)
- Example deliverables the client has already approved
- FAQ or support macros if you handle customer-facing copy — see also our guide on creating client FAQ and support drafts with AI while keeping brand voice
Prefer short, current files over dumping an entire Drive folder. Large, stale PDFs waste context and increase the chance of outdated answers.
Write project instructions that keep you consistent
Use Set project instructions for rules that should apply to every chat in that workspace: tone, audience, formatting, what to refuse, and how to handle uncertainty (for example “flag claims that need a human source check”).
Keep account-wide Instructions for Claude for your personal defaults (British English, concise structure, no invented metrics). Use project instructions for client-specific rules. That split matches Anthropic’s personalisation overview and reduces cross-client bleed.
Example instruction themes (adapt; do not copy blindly):
- Write in British English unless the client style guide says otherwise
- Never invent testimonials, prices or case study results
- Prefer the uploaded brand guide over generic marketing clichés
- When a fact is missing from the knowledge base, say so and ask for the source
A simple weekly workflow
If you also work in Gmail and Docs, Claude Projects can sit alongside tools such as Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Meet — use each where it already lives in your stack rather than forcing one AI into every step.
Sharing, memory and model choice
Sharing: Only Team and Enterprise get project sharing (view or edit permissions, email invites, organisation-wide options where admins allow). Freelancers on Free, Pro or Max should treat Projects as private workspaces and export deliverables through your usual client channels.
Memory: Memory is on by default for Free, Pro and Max on web, desktop and mobile. Team and Enterprise depend on owner settings. Each project can keep its own memory separate from non-project chats; move chats in or out of a project if something landed in the wrong memory scope.
Models: Which models you can pick depends on plan. For a deeper look at Anthropic’s Fable 5.1 positioning for agencies and freelancers, see Claude Fable 5.1 for freelancers and small agencies. Projects organise context; they do not replace choosing an appropriate model for the task.
Practical limits and hygiene
- Stay within the five-project Free cap by archiving finished client work (archive preserves knowledge; delete only when you are sure).
- Do not put secrets, passwords or regulated personal data into a project unless your contract and Anthropic’s terms allow that processing.
- Name files clearly (client-brand-voice-2026-10.txt) so you can rotate them.
- Star active projects for quicker access from the sidebar.
- Remember: the project title Claude shows you is for humans; instructions and knowledge are what the model uses.
When to upgrade — and when not to
Upgrade considerations based on documented features, not promised income:
- You need more than five active client workspaces → Pro or Max Projects capacity.
- Knowledge bases regularly hit context limits → paid RAG expansion.
- You need colleagues inside the same project → Team or Enterprise sharing.
- You mainly need occasional drafts with light context → Free may be enough if you keep projects lean.
There is no honest way to promise that Projects will raise your rates or win clients. They are an organisation and consistency tool. Revenue still depends on your positioning, delivery quality and sales process.
Conclusion
Claude Projects give freelancers a clean way to separate client context: dedicated chats, a reusable knowledge base and project instructions, with a clear Free ceiling of five projects and paid options for larger knowledge via RAG and for team sharing. Set up one project per active client or productised service, keep knowledge short and current, and verify prices on Anthropic’s site before you pay. Used that way, Projects support professional AI-assisted work without turning your inbox into one muddled conversation.
